The Marcionite division

Marcion held that the God of the Hebrew scriptures is not the Father of Jesus Christ, and published a canon to match. He was expelled at Rome in 144 and built a rival church that lasted centuries.
How it ended. Rejected everywhere, and the answer to it did more than anything else to make the church state which books are scripture.
