The synodal reply of 24 July, anathematizing the bull and the men who drew it up — carefully, the document and its authors rather than the Roman church. Each side believed it had excommunicated a faction. The schism these two documents are said to have begun took another century and a half, and a sack of Constantinople, to become real.
