The council that deposed and anathematized Photius and restored Ignatius, held with Roman legates presiding and by Latin procedure. Rome counts it the eighth ecumenical council; the East does not, having set it aside ten years afterwards. Its canons are Ignatian church order, and the one on images restates Nicaea II for a West that had never quite accepted it. 27 canons in all.
