Zeno's attempt to reunite the empire's churches by writing a formula both sides could sign: it affirms Nicaea, Constantinople and Cyril's twelve chapters, anathematizes Nestorius and Eutyches, and simply does not mention Chalcedon or the two natures. Silence as policy. It held Egypt and Syria for a generation and cost Constantinople communion with Rome for thirty-five years. The union formula is of 482; the text is preserved in Evagrius, HE 3.14.
