Cardinal Humbert laid it on the altar of Hagia Sophia on 16 July 1054, in the name of a pope who had been dead for three months — the technical reason it had no force, and the reason it took centuries for anyone to say so. It anathematizes Cerularius and his supporters and accuses the Greeks of, among other things, having removed the filioque from the creed. The legates walked out shaking the dust from their feet.
