The gospel the early church set first: Jesus as the Messiah of Israel's scriptures, teaching in five great discourses from the Sermon on the Mount to the last judgment. Tradition from Papias onward names the apostle Matthew; the church received it everywhere and without dispute from the earliest canon lists.
