Frumentius, a shipwrecked Syrian boy raised at the Aksumite court, won the young king Ezana to the faith; consecrated bishop by Athanasius (c. 330), he returned as the first abun. Ethiopia's church, born of that consecration, remained a daughter of Alexandria until 1959.
The kingdom of Aksum enters Christendom under the see of Alexandria — the abun consecrated in Egypt for fifteen centuries.
