Alexandria — see of Mark, Athanasius and Cyril — capitulated to Amr ibn al-As in 641 after the empire's Egyptian collapse. The Coptic patriarchate, estranged from Constantinople since Chalcedon, negotiated its own existence under the conquest; the Melkite line clung on in the shrinking Greek quarter.
The second see of Christendom under the caliphate; Coptic and Melkite lines both continue.
