martyrdom · 61 · Salamis
The Cypriot account has him stoned by the synagogue at Salamis and buried secretly outside the city by Mark, with a copy of the gospel of Matthew laid on his breast. Nothing early attests it — the Acts of Barnabas that carries the story is fifth-century — and it is marked traditional here. What makes it worth recording rather than passing over is that the grave, and specifically the book in it, became the decisive evidence in a jurisdictional argument in 478, and the Church of Cyprus is autocephalous today because of it.
A grave outside Salamis that mattered enormously four centuries later.
