The received account has him flayed alive and then beheaded at Albanopolis in Armenia, and the flaying is what four hundred years of Western painting fixed on — Michelangelo gave the flayed skin in the Sistine Last Judgment his own face. Armenia claims him and Thaddeus as its first enlighteners, three centuries before Gregory, which is the claim by which the Armenian church dates itself apostolic. The sources are late; the dataset already asserted is_martyr and recorded no martyrdom, which is the gap this closes.
