Benedict founds Monte Cassino

foundation · 529 · Abbey of Monte Cassino

Around 529 Benedict of Nursia established his community on the mountain above Cassino and wrote his Rule — a school for the Lord's service, moderate where the desert had been heroic. Carried by Gregory the Great's esteem, it became the single rule of the western monastic world.

The Rule of Benedict — moderate, ordered, durable — becomes the charter of western monasticism.
