Eusebius says only that Clement died in the third year of Trajan, having held the ministry nine years. Everything else comes from a Passio no earlier than the fourth century and probably later: exile to the marble quarries of the Chersonese, a spring struck from the rock, two thousand baptisms, and finally an anchor tied about his neck and the sea. The anchor is why he is painted with one, and why sailors kept him. This dataset had asserted his martyrdom on the person row — is_martyr true, cause of death by drowning — while recording no martyrdom at all, which left the claim standing with nothing under it to judge. The event is here so the claim can be read and weighed, and it is marked legendary because that is what it is.
