Baptism of Clovis

mission · 508 · Reims

Clovis, king of the Franks, was baptized at Reims by Remigius with three thousand of his warriors — tradition long said 496; scholarship now leans toward c. 508. Alone among the Germanic kings he entered as a Catholic, not an Arian: the fact on which Gaul's future, and the papacy's Frankish alliance, would be built.

The Franks enter the church Catholic, not Arian — the alliance of Rome and the Franks starts here.
