On 11 May 330 Constantine dedicated his new capital on the Bosporus. The village see of Byzantium now sat beside the palace; within two generations its bishop ranked second in Christendom, and the city's rise reordered the church's ancient geography — the root of a thousand years of rivalry with the elder sees.
