In 630, the Persian war won, Heraclius carried the True Cross back into Jerusalem — on foot, tradition says, stripped of imperial splendour. The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross keeps the memory; within a decade the city would fall again, this time for good.
The Cross returned in triumph — kept since as the feast of the Exaltation.
