Pilate heard the word Galilee and saw a way out — Galilee was Antipas' jurisdiction, and Antipas was in Jerusalem for the feast. He had wanted to see Jesus for a long time, having heard about him, and hoped to watch him do a sign; Luke had already reported the tetrarch asking who this was and trying to see him. He questioned him at some length and got nothing at all, while the chief priests and scribes stood by accusing him vehemently. So Antipas and his soldiers treated him with contempt, mocked him, put splendid clothing on him, and sent him back. Luke closes the scene with the detail that sticks: Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity.
Two hearings and a reconciliation: nothing is decided, and Pilate gets the prisoner back.
