council · 1051 · Kyiv
In 1051 Yaroslav gathered the bishops of Rus' in Saint Sophia and they set Hilarion, 'a Rus' by birth', on the metropolitan throne — without reference to Constantinople. The author of the Sermon on Law and Grace held the see only briefly; after Yaroslav's death the Greeks resumed sending metropolitans. The precedent outlived the experiment.
The first native metropolitan — Rus' tests the length of Constantinople's leash.
