The last part of his life reads as a retreat conducted at length. He left Palestine when the crowds became impossible, went to Egypt, then to Sicily, then to Dalmatia, and was recognised in each place — Jerome makes the recognitions the point, since a man who runs from fame and keeps being caught by it is the hagiographer's ideal. He settled at last on Cyprus, inland from Paphos, in country his biographer says was rough enough that most people gave up. He died there at about eighty. Hesychius, his disciple, is said to have taken the body back to Palestine, and the Cypriots to have kept the grave and shown it anyway, which is the ordinary shape of a relic dispute and is recorded here as such rather than settled.
