Leo V renewed iconoclasm in 814: the patriarch Nikephoros was deposed, Theodore the Studite exiled again, and the icon-painters and monks bore the weight for a generation. It ended in 843 when the empress Theodora restored the icons — the Triumph of Orthodoxy.
