He had been sent to Rome by the confessors while they were still in the prisons, and he came back to a church whose bishop had died in custody at ninety. Eusebius puts it plainly: Pothinus having died with the other martyrs in Gaul at ninety years of age, Irenaeus succeeded him in the episcopate of the church at Lyons. Jerome says the same and adds that he had been a presbyter under Pothinus. The dataset cannot yet draw the edge — offices.csv has no Lyon line and neither man holds a tenure — so this event is where the succession is recorded until it can. Pothinus is not on the row: he died in 177 and this is 178, and a posthumous entry would render on his page as a turning point in his life.
