conquest · 614 · Jerusalem
In May 614 Khosrau II's general Shahrbaraz stormed Jerusalem. The churches burned, the patriarch Zacharias went into Persian captivity with the relic of the True Cross, and the slaughter — mourned in contemporary laments — shook Christendom as Rome's sack had two centuries before.
The True Cross carried to Ctesiphon and the patriarch into captivity — the holy city's first fall in the Christian era.
