martyrdom · 29 · Machaerus
At Herod's birthday feast the daughter of Herodias danced, and Herod swore to give her whatever she asked, to half his kingdom. Prompted by her mother she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter, and the king, sorry but unwilling to break an oath sworn in front of his guests, sent the executioner. The disciples took the body and laid it in a tomb, and went and told Jesus. Both halves of the church keep the day on 29 August, and it is the reason this dataset counts the Forerunner a martyr.
The Forerunner is killed; his disciples bury him and go and tell Jesus.
