Herod Antipas had taken Herodias, his brother's wife, and John told him it was not lawful. So Herod seized him and bound him — at the fortress of Machaerus east of the Dead Sea, on Josephus' account, who adds the political motive the gospels leave out: a preacher who could move that great a crowd was a rebellion waiting to happen. Mark dates the beginning of the Galilean ministry from the arrest. From the prison John sent his own disciples to ask whether Jesus was the one who was to come.
