Matthew tells the Incarnation from Joseph's side. Finding Mary with child before they came together, and being a just man unwilling to shame her, he resolved to divorce her quietly — and the angel came in a dream: 'Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife.' He woke, did as he was told, and named the child Jesus. Not one word of his is recorded in any gospel; the naming is his single recorded act, and it is what makes the child legally a son of David.
Joseph takes Mary as his wife and names the child.
