She was the granddaughter of Melania the Elder and married Pinianus at fourteen, and after two children died in infancy they agreed to separate. What followed was an act of divestment on a scale that alarmed the government: estates in Italy, Sicily, Spain, Gaul, Numidia, Mauretania and Britain, thousands of slaves freed or transferred, and enough gold moving at once that the senate tried to block it. They went to Africa, where Augustine and Alypius took some of the money for the church at Thagaste, and then to Jerusalem, where she built on the Mount of Olives beside where her grandmother had built, and where she died on the last day of 439.
