Jerome puts it in one sentence and then leaves it open: Methodius, he says, at the end suffered martyrdom at Chalcis in Greece, and adds — at the end of the last persecution, or as some affirm, under Decius and Valerian. Those are two datings half a century apart, offered without a choice between them. The received account, and the one this dataset follows, takes the later: the end of the Great Persecution, about 311. No place is written on this event, and that is deliberate. Olympus is not in this dataset's place table at all, and the only Chalcis it holds is the desert of Chalcis ad Belum in Syria, where Jerome kept his hermitage — a different place in a different country, which an unmatched name would have resolved to silently.
