The mission is an inference from the burial, and the burial is unusually well attested for an apostle. Hierapolis sits in the Lycus valley above Laodicea and Colossae, in the province whose churches the letter to the Colossians greets, and it is the one place in Asia besides Ephesus that claimed an apostolic grave. What Philip did there the record does not say; that he was buried there, the church of Asia was asserting to the bishop of Rome within about a hundred and thirty years of his death.
