The persecution that killed Stephen scattered the church, and Acts says drily that those who were scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to a city of Samaria — to the people the Judaeans would not eat with — and they gave heed with one accord, and there was much joy in that city. It is the first time in Acts that the gospel is carried outside Judaea, and it is done by one of the seven men appointed to wait on tables rather than by an apostle. Peter and John came down afterwards to lay hands on the converts, which is the church catching up with what a deacon had already done.
To preach where the scattering had driven him.
Samaria believes, and the apostles come down from Jerusalem to see it.
