foundation · 825 · Kollam
In 825, by the south-Indian tradition, the bishops Mar Sabor and Mar Proth arrived on the Malabar coast and the church at Quilon was founded under royal favor — the event from which the Kollam era, Kerala's own calendar, still counts. The copper plates of 849 show the community's standing in law within a generation.
A church, a port and a calendar: Kerala counts its years from Christian Quilon.
