Founding of Saint Sophia in Kyiv

foundation · 1037 · Kyiv

In 1037 Yaroslav the Wise founded Saint Sophia in Kyiv on the name and model of Constantinople's Great Church, and gathered scribes there to translate the Greek books. The cathedral became the seat of the metropolitans of Rus', the coronation church of its princes, and the room in which its first native literature was read aloud.

Rus' builds its Great Church — the metropolitan see gets its cathedral and its school.
