He died at Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete, at a great age, and no tradition makes him a martyr — which is why the role here is reposed. Gortyn was destroyed by the Arab conquest of Crete in the ninth century and never recovered, but the site of the basilica of Saint Titus is still there and the church of Crete still keeps him as its founder. His head was taken to Venice, kept in San Marco, and given back to Heraklion in 1966, which is a late footnote but a real one.
