Three verses at the head of Luke 8 do something no other passage does: they say where the money came from. The twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed — Mary called Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Chuza who was Herod's household manager, Susanna, and many others — who provided for them out of their means. Two things follow that are easy to walk past. The first is that an itinerant band of a dozen men and their teacher had to eat, and Luke says plainly that women funded it. The second is Joanna's husband: Chuza managed the household of Herod Antipas, the tetrarch who had John beheaded, so part of the money that kept the mission moving came out of the court that killed the Forerunner. Susanna is named here and nowhere else in the New Testament, which is the whole of her record.
