Paulinus baptizes Edwin at York

Edwin was baptized at York on Easter Day, 12 April 627, in the eleventh year of his reign — by Bede's reckoning about a hundred and eighty years after the English came to Britain. The church was one he had built of timber while he was still being catechised, dedicated to Saint Peter; in the same city he gave Paulinus, who had taught and baptized him, his see. As soon as he was baptized he set about raising a larger church of stone on the spot, with the first wooden oratory standing inside it.
