Kept on 10 February by the church in Malta and by nobody else: the General Roman Calendar as revised in 1969 carries nothing on this day. It remembers the wreck on Melite told in Acts 27-28 — the two hundred and seventy-six who reached land alive, the three winter months, the viper shaken off into the fire, and Publius, the chief man of the island, whom Maltese tradition makes the islands' first bishop — as the hour the Maltese church counts its own beginning. The archbishop keeps it with a pontifical Mass at the collegiate church of San Pawl Nawfragu in Valletta, and the day is a public holiday across Malta and Gozo.
