John sets the raising of Lazarus immediately before the entry into Jerusalem and makes it the sign that decides the council to kill him. The Byzantine calendar keeps the two on consecutive days — Lazarus Saturday and then Palm Sunday — and reads them as one movement rather than two feasts. Lent has ended by then; Holy Week has not begun. The two days stand between, and the hymns of the first already anticipate the tomb of the second.
