The primacy of the East under the Syriac Orthodox patriarch of Antioch — a second head for the faithful beyond the Roman frontier, in Mesopotamia and Persia, where an Antiochene patriarch could not reach. Jacob Baradaeus ordained Ahudemmeh metropolitan of the East in 559; Marutha fixed the see at Tikrit in 629 and is the first maphrian Assemani will count. Bar Hebraeus, who held the office himself, numbered his predecessors continuing the count from the primates of Seleucia rather than beginning again.

The office lapsed in 1860; its dignity is now held by the Catholicos of India within the Syriac Orthodox communion.
