Boris I's baptism (864) brought Bulgaria into the church, and a council of 870 granted its archbishop autonomy. Clement and Naum, disciples of Cyril and Methodius, made the land a beacon of Slavic letters; the see stood as a patriarchate at Preslav until 1018, then as the archbishopric of Ohrid — whose archbishop Leo wrote the 1053 letter that opened the schism exchange.
Its heritage is claimed today by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church (patriarchate restored 1953) and the Macedonian Orthodox Church – Ohrid Archbishopric (recognized 2022).
