The origin of salus extra ecclesiam non est, and its setting is narrower than the phrase became: Cyprian is arguing that a heretic who is martyred outside the Church is not thereby saved, against those who would grant the crown to men baptized in a schism. He is answering Jubaianus in the rebaptism controversy with Stephen of Rome.
