The East Syrian church history written at the end of the sixth century by a bishop of Halwan, and the nearest thing there is to a witness for the school of Nisibis from inside the Church of the East. Its chapter XXXI is the life of Narsai — where he came from, how he taught, why he left Edessa, and how Barsauma of Nisibis met him there and asked him 'de profiter de leur rencontre pour fonder la communauté (l'école) de Mésopotamie'. F. Nau's Syriac text with a facing French translation, Patrologia Orientalis IX fasc. 5 (Paris: Firmin-Didot, 1913). BARHADBESHABBA HIMSELF DATES NOTHING in this chapter; every year in it is Nau's, in his notes. And PO IV.4, Barhadbeshabba's separate 'Cause de la fondation des écoles', is NOT this text.
