Bede on the house he was given to at seven and never left: Benedict Biscop building St Peter's at the mouth of the Wear on land King Egfrid gave him, the six journeys to Rome for books and glaziers and a chanter, the second grant that became St Paul's at Jarrow, and the four abbots after him. It is the only place Bede dates the foundation, and it is the nearest thing the English church has to a monastery's account of itself.
