The first Christian travel document: an anonymous pilgrim's road-book from Bordeaux to Jerusalem and back, listing every posting-station and its distance, and then — the reason it is here — describing the holy places of Jerusalem AS THEY WERE BEING IDENTIFIED in the year Constantine's churches were going up. Read here in Aubrey Stewart's English, Palestine Pilgrims' Text Society vol. I (London, 1887); the Latin critical text is geyer-itinera. ⚠ IT IS EVIDENCE OF WHAT WAS BELIEVED IN 333, NOT OF WHAT HAPPENED IN 33, and several of the identifications he is shown cannot be what he is told they are. A site he names is `documented` for the IDENTIFICATION and the underlying event keeps its own grade — the distinction the evidence ladder exists to hold. ⚠ AND THE YEAR IS NOT SETTLED IN THIS EDITION ITSELF: the PPTS preface dates him 332 while the consular date in the text gives 333, so a row citing him should carry the date it reads rather than the date the preface asserts.
