The Institutiones is a reading list and a curriculum for the monks of Vivarium — what to read, in what order, and how to correct a text — and it is the document that made copying manuscripts a monastic duty rather than a hobby. The Variae are the state letters he drafted for Theoderic and his successors, and are the main source for Ostrogothic Italy. Cited here, never quoted.
