The critical edition that turned the Liber Pontificalis from a source into a document with a history. Duchesne separated its layers, dated its recensions, and showed where its early lives are copying the Liberian Catalogue and where they are filling gaps by arithmetic - which is why this project cites it against its own Roman dates rather than for them. Volume 1 (1886) carries the text and commentary to the eighth century; volume 2 (1892) continues it; the Etude of 1877 is the argument in short. FRENCH, and read under the project's translation policy: facts and dates are taken from it and the prose here is ours, cited to him. He is a critical Catholic scholar of the 1880s writing about the Roman see, and where his conclusions bear on the see's antiquity they are conclusions, not data.
