Four books of stories about Italian holy men, the second of which is entirely Benedict and is the only narrative source for him there is. Gregory says he had it from four of Benedict's own disciples whom he names. It is a book of miracles and was meant to be, so the ordinary facts in it — the sister, the site, the Rule, the Goths — carry a different weight from the marvels. Everything known about Scholastica is one chapter of it. Not in the volumes held here: cited, never quoted.
