Jerome's correspondence — the fullest single record of the Roman ascetic circle and of the Bethlehem years. Letter 22, to Eustochium (384), is the most influential Latin treatise on consecrated virginity of its century; Letter 108, the Epitaphium Sanctae Paulae (404), runs from Paula's senatorial birth to her grave under the Church of the Nativity and carries the itinerary of her pilgrimage.
