A parish handbook of 1899 that walks through the Orthodox services in order and explains what each is for — the daily cycle from Vespers to the Liturgy, the vessels and vestments, the sacraments, and the calendar. It is written for a reader who attends the services and wants to know what is happening in them, so it says plainly things a service book assumes: that the feasts fall into three grades, that Pascha stands above all of them, and which twelve are the Great Feasts and on what days they fall. That makes it a second, independently published English witness to the shape of the Byzantine calendar, beside the Slavonic Typikon this project already holds.
