The first written monastic rule: a horarium, a dress, work assigned by house, meals in common, and a novitiate — the machinery that turned solitary asceticism into an institution that could outlive its founder. Sozomen says an angel delivered it on a brass tablet. Basil read it, Jerome translated it into Latin, and Benedict is downstream of both.
