A lawyer asks who his neighbour is; Christ answers with a story in which the priest and the Levite pass by and the enemy stops. The point turns on the hearer being asked not 'who is my neighbour' but 'who proved neighbour', which reverses the question. Samaritan has been an English word for a rescuer ever since.
