Three chapters of Matthew that the church has read as the charter of Christ's teaching: the Beatitudes, the new reading of the law, the Lord's Prayer, and the closing warning about the house built on sand. Luke gives a shorter version on level ground, which is why some call it the Sermon on the Plain. The teachings given here are listed separately below and carry this event as their occasion.
