The Rich Man and Lazarus

parable · parable of Jesus (Luke 16:19–31) about the relationship, during life and after death, between an unnamed rich man and a poor beggar named Lazarus

A rich man feasts while a beggar lies at his gate; after death their positions are reversed and a great chasm is fixed between them. It is the only parable in which a character is given a name. The closing line — that they would not believe though one rose from the dead — is read as pointing past itself.
